What is Pelvic Health?
Pelvic health and urogynecology are subspecialties within the field of gynecology that deal specifically with problems related to the muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues that support the pelvic organs or pelvic floor — the bladder, vagina, uterus, and rectum. Factors such as childbirth, heavy lifting, the effects of menopause and aging, can cause weakening of the pelvic floor and lead to a variety of disorders. While disorders of the pelvic floor are commonly associated with advancing age, even young women can be affected.Unfortunately, even though pelvic health disorders can be extremely uncomfortable, painful and life-limiting, many women are reluctant to seek treatment. Lack of treatment or delayed treatment can negatively affect a woman’s quality of everyday life. Symptoms may include but are not limited to sexual dysfunction, abdominal pain and pressure, anemia, complications with fertility and pregnancy, and even depression.
